Season 2 Episode 9
Air Date: November 22, 2005
Writter: Jennifer Celotta
Summary: After Michael sets up e-mail surveillance in the office, he discovers Jim is having a party, and he was not invited. The camera crew catches wind of an office romance (and it’s not Jim and Pam).
2. Quick Recap
Cold Open – The IT Guy: As Michael proclaims it’s another beautiful Scranton day, he looks out the window and spots a man wearing a turban coming into the building. Michael’s reaction is … about what you’d expect it to be.
“I gotta erase a lot of stuff”: The man wearing a turban is actually the IT guy here to set up company email surveillance for Michael. The office is upset over the breach of privacy, and Michael is upset to learn the staff only mentions him in their emails when they’re complaining about him.
“Wonder Where My E-vitation Is”: With the new surveillance capabilities, Michael learns Jim is hosting a party . . . and he was not invited. Michael spends the rest of the day trying to get someone to spill the beans about the party and when he’s unsuccessful, he instead goes to improv class. Michael thinks he’s great at improv, but he really is only good at irritating everyone and doing everything possible to dominate every skit.
A New Office Romance?: Pam suspects a relationship between Angela and Dwight and enlists the camera crew to help her find clues such as Angela and Dwight sharing candy bars. At Jim’s party, Pam asks Phyllis if she’s heard any hook-up rumors, and is dismayed when Phyllis suggests Pam and Jim is the “secret office romance”. Pam immediately quits investigating, telling the camera it was wrong of her to assume anything was going on.
Islands in the Stream: When Michael’s improv group doesn’t invite him to drinks, he crashes Jim’s party and the atmosphere immediately goes from fun and casual to awkward. After Michael struggles alone with a karaoke duet, Jim stands up to sing with his boss, lightening the mood. In the backyard the camera catches the feet of two people making out, wearing the same shoes Angela and Dwight were shown wearing.
2A: Flonkerton Medal Ceremony
The “Dwangela” Medal: Although there have been a couple hints, this episode marks the beginning of the other great “Office” romance as it confirms Dwight and Angela are totally hooking up.
3. Flonkerton’s Favorite Quotes
Michael: There are certain things a boss does not share with his employees. His salary, that would depress them. His bed, it— And I am not going to tell them that I’ll be reading their e-mails.
Pam: Hey, Dwight, um, my friend is kinda into these two girls that he works with.
Pam: One is tall and brunette, and the other one is short, and blonde, and perky, and kinda judgmental. Who do you think he should choose?
Dwight: Does he have access to their medical records?
Dwight: I think one of the greatest things about modern America is the computerization of medical records. As a volunteer sheriff, I can look up anyone’s psychiatric records or surgical histories. Yeast infections. There are a huge number of yeast infections in this county. Probably because we are down river from that old bread factory.
Michael: There’s always a distance between a boss and the employees. It is just nature’s rule. It’s intimidation mostly, it’s the awareness that they are not me. I do think that I am very approachable, as one of the guys. But maybe I need to be even approachabler.
Jim: It’s true. I’m having a party. I’ve got three cases of imported beer, a karaoke machine, and I didn’t invite Michael. So three ingredients for a great party. And it’s nothing personal, I just think that if he were there, people wouldn’t be able to relax, and you know, have fun, and my roommate wants to meet everybody. Because I’m pretty sure he thinks that I’m making Dwight up. He is very real.
Michael: Dwight, oh ho, Dwight, Dwight, my loyal compadre. You and I are hangin’ tonight. The two of us. We are celebrating our freedom and our manhood. You know what? Why don’t we watch that show that you’ve been wanting to watch, that stupid Battleship Galaxy.
Dwight: Battlestar Galactica.
Michael: Think about this; what is the most exciting thing that can happen, on TV, or in movies, or in real life? Somebody has a gun. [gasps] That’s why I always start with a gun, because you can’t top it, you just can’t.
Pam: Jim’s bedroom.
Jim: See, I knew we lost somebody on the tour. It’s-
Pam: Cool… This is your desk.
Jim: This is my desk.
Pam: Your home office?
Jim: My home office, this is it.
Pam: Down. You have to sit down so I can get the full effect.
Jim: Ok, sure. Will do.
Pam: Ok, wait, so that would make me [walks to side of room] like right here.
Jim: Yeah, that… Yep, that feels about right.
Pam: And Dwight would be like-
Jim: You know what? Let’s just leave that image out of it, because this is a happy place. Happy thoughts, Pam. Happy thoughts.
Michael: Funny story: the way that I got into improv was, I got into improv. The story about me getting into improv was that I was walking down the street, and a race car pulls up, and the guy says “Hey you’re funny, you’re the funniest guy I’ve ever seen, or my name is not Dale Earnhardt.” [giggles] And that was an improv. Um, the real way is that I found a flyer.
- possible continuity error: Michael mentions going to college, though previously in The Fire, and later in Business School it’s established he didn’t go to college. He likely made it up to make a point.
- Dwight and Angela are making out in a playhouse in the backyard. A deleted scene explains the playhouse belongs to the owners of the house Jim is renting.
- If the guy who teases Michael at improv looks familiar, that’s because it’s Ken Jeong of The Hangover and Community fame.
- possible continuity error: Jim claims he hasn’t talk to Katy for a while, but she shows up two episodes from now as Jim’s date on the “Booze Cruise.” This might just be an indication that Jim and Katy had a very off and on relationship.
- According to Jim’s Evite, the barbecue was at 8pm, Nov. 5 at 2147 West Silverlake Drive. However Nov. 5, 2005 was a Saturday and Michael confirmed the episode was on a Friday. (There is also no Silverlake Drive in Scranton).
- Though next season Jim claims to be really bad at Call Of Duty 2, he has a computer version of “Call of Duty” on his desk in his room, and Toby is playing the XBox 360 version in the background later.
