Summer Viewing Club: Office Marathon 2

This is the 6th installment of my “viewing club” series. Each week, whatever rerun NBC airs, I will suggest 2 or 3 episodes with the same “theme” and post some discussion questions.

This week’s reruns: Office Olympics, Booze Cruise, The Secret
The theme: Secret Secrets
“Secret secrets are no fun, secret secrets hurt someone.” Despite that sage advice from Elizabeth the stripper, there are plenty of secrets of the romantic variety floating around Dunder Mifflin; secret crushes, secret romances, even secret desires to break up.

The Viewing List
Office Olympics (2.03): Office games allow Jim and Pam to hang out and scheme together all day, but Angela is starting to suspect something more between the supposed “friends.”

Booze Cruise (2.11): Jim’s feelings for Pam are just under the surface as they share a moment on the deck, and Angela attempts to steal new boyfriend Dwight away from his “captain” duties.

The Secret (2.13): Jim’s confided his feelings for Pam in the world worst confidant, Michael, and now must distract him before he reveals his crush to everyone. Meanwhile, Dwight discovers something interesting as he investigates why Oscar called in sick.

Traveling Salesman (3.13): Dwight and Angela’s secret romance is in danger of being revealed as Andy makes a play to be Michael’s number two. Meanwhile Karen learns about Jim’s past and confronts him.

Extra Credit
E-mail Surveillance (2.09): Jim’s attempts to keep his barbecue a secret from Michael are thwarted when Michael installs e-mail surveillance, and the camera crew catches wind of a new office romance.

Discussion Questions:
1. Overall, how much of a “gossip mill” would you say Dunder Mifflin is?

2. Say Jim did revealed his feelings to Pam on the Booze Cruise, how do you think Pam would have reacted? How would it have changed things overall?

3. Why are Dwight and Angela so desperate to keep their romance a secret from their coworkers?

4. If you worked at Dunder Mifflin and had a secret, who would you be most likely tell? Who would you be most likely to not tell?

I welcome suggestions for what the theme of next week’s viewing club should be. Next week is a rerun of “The Initiation.”

  1. I’m posting my answers to these questions kind of late but…what the heck, right? =)

    1. I actually don’t think DM is that big of a “gossip mill”. Gossip isn’t really an issue in the office, unless Michael gets wind of a secret and exposes it to everyone =P Otherwise, people like Stanley, Angela, Oscar, Dwight, Creed, etc. don’t look like the type to care about gossip.

    2. I remember reading on one of Jenna’s blogs (or was it from the Booze Cruise commentary?…i forgot =/) that, when Jim and Pam were out on the deck talking to each other on BC, that Pam, at first, was in a position that, if Jim were to have said anything, she would reciprocate his feelings, etc. I think Jenna said that if Jim were to kiss Pam on the deck, she would have been fine w/ that (or something along those lines). The point i’m trying to make is, i felt that way about Pam when they were out on the deck…and then it got awkward and she left him there. But she probably would have been more inclined to reciprocate Jim’s feelings at that moment versus a month before her wedding w/ Roy. She probably could have left Roy more easily then. But Pam was also a lot more meek and, well, chicken, and Jim’s words may have scared her and she would have denied him anyway. I really don’t know on this one ^^;;

    3. They’re pretty secretive people. They probably feel that it is nobody’s business to interfere in their personal life. Plus, they probably really like being all secretive and such ^_~ Maybe being in a relationship might make others see them as…weak? =P

    4. If i had a secret…i would probably tell Jim or Pam. They seem to be able to keep secrets pretty well, especially if i’m a friend of theirs versus being an enemy. I would NOT tell Michael or Kelly, that’s for sure =D

  2. 1. Overall, how much of a “gossip mill” would you say Dunder Mifflin is?
It took 6 weeks for Karen to get any wind of Jim’s “old” crush on Pam, ’nuff said

    2. Say Jim did revealed his feelings to Pam on the Booze Cruise, how do you think Pam would have reacted? How would it have changed things overall?
I do think Pam would have probably had a similar reaction to her CN reaction, being dumbfounded, saying she can’t and trying to reiterate that his friendship meant a lot. She kind of did that anyway by breaking his intense stare and going back inside. But perhaps she would have faced her own feelings, found the courage to dump Roy and got to Jim sooner.
It worked out anyway, eventually 😉

    3. Why are Dwight and Angela so desperate to keep their romance a secret from their coworkers?
This I can’t quite figure out, since like I said in the first question, DM isn’t really that much of a gossip mill. I think it’s at the point where they’re maintaining the secret just for the thrill of it.

    4. If you worked at Dunder Mifflin and had a secret, who would you be most likely tell? Who would you be most likely to not tell?
Definitely would be least likely to tell Michael or Kelly. Also Toby wouldn’t be a good choice since he might write something down as a complaint. I’d be most likely to tell Pam, she pretty good at that.
